Evan Wong, Co-Founder and CEO of Checkbox, is one of the few entrepreneurs who managed to turn a university assignment into a genuine business success story. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Evan studied Law and Commerce (Finance) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). It was during a final-year law course assignment that the idea for Checkbox was first born.
Evan’s entrepreneurial journey started early. At just 17, he founded Hero Education, an award-winning tutoring company that mentored over 1,000 high school students. That early experience gave him the confidence and grounding that would later prove valuable in building Checkbox.
Founded in Sydney in 2016, Checkbox has grown into a no-code workflow automation platform that uses AI to streamline legal and compliance processes. Over time, the company pivoted more specifically toward legal AI, and is now known as an AI “front door” for corporate legal teams — intaking, triaging, and automating requests. Fortune 500 companies such as PepsiCo and Telstra count among its clients.
Evan’s leadership has earned recognition across the industry. He was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2019, has spoken at TEDx events, and has been honored as LegalTech CEO of the Year. In early 2026, Checkbox raised a $23 million Series A round led by Touring Capital, valuing the company at roughly $100 million, with participation from Peak XV (formerly Sequoia India), Tidal Ventures, and other investors.
Today, Evan runs the company from New York, with a clear mission: to make Checkbox as essential to legal teams as platforms like Salesforce are to sales teams.
